America’s Next Top Model calls Black History Month racist

One of the things that irks me in life is someone forming an opinion based on the lack of information and lack of education.

Adrianne Curry, winner of the first season of ‘America’s Next Top Model’, is one of those people.

She has written a blog entry about how Black History Month and BET are racist. Not surprisingly, the majority of people commenting on her blog agree (and the same goes for the Perez Hilton entry).

Reading her blog and reading the comments left on it and on the Perez Hilton entry just burn me up. Because those are more uneducated opinions. So, this entry will serve to teach just why Black History Month and BET exist.

Class is in session.

Carter G. WoodsonBlack History Month

In the beginning, Black History Month was started by Carter G. Woodson (head of the then called Association for the Study of Negro Life and History) in 1926 as Negro History Week. He chose the week in February that fell between the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson viewed Negro History Week as a means to counter the belief that blacks do not and had not contributed to society. In addition, it serves as a way to boost black self esteem – I am only 28 years old and each year in school, Black History was barely covered and numerous classmates of mine would make comments like: black people don’t write books, black people have not done anything important, etc. The classmates who said this were both white AND black. Each time I heard, and hear, that, I shake my head and feel my blood boil. It is a result of the lack of education and Black History Month serves to counter that.

This purpose remains to this day.

During Negro History Week, Woodson and his organization would distribute educational materials concerning African Americans. It originally was only celebrated and recognized by Black Americans, however, numerous mayors, governors, and other officials (especially in the North) took notice and saw it as a means to promote racial harmony.

It is not, and has never been, an official government holiday. Black History Month is awareness that is voluntarily participated in each year. Black History Month is not alone, you have: Women’s History Month (which began in 1911 - before Black History Month), Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, National Hispanic History Month, and others.

In 1976, the week was expanded to a month by Woodson’s organization, now called The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. This was a result of those involved in the Civil Rights/Black Power Movement feeling that a week was not adequate.

Black History Month is a prime example of African American’s, and other groups, exercising their power and not waiting for the majority to ‘do right’ by them:

  • Blacks did not wait for slavery to end - they did their damnest to escape bondage
  • Blacks did not wait for the majority to stop viewing them as ‘unintelligent apes’ and other stereotypes - Woodson started Negro History Week
  • Blacks did not wait for the majority to pay them equal wages - A. Philip Randolph basically started the Civil Rights Movement with his Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (a labor union)
  • Blacks did not wait for the majority to recognize their Civil Rights - the NAACP and numerous organizations rose and fought for them
  • Blacks did not wait for the majority to provide entertainment and programming of interest to them - Robert Johnson started Black Entertainment Television
  • and the list goes on and on and other ‘racial minority’ groups in this country did the same thing

These are all examples of Black Power in action - hardly racist as she claims.

Is Black History Month still needed?

The short answer is YES. Why? There are numerous reasons, however, for the purpose of the article we will focus on a few - with the main points being a result of Adrian Curry’s blog.

Her argument is that we need to be ‘one America’, from a philosophical standpoint, that would be ideal. However, it will not happen anytime soon if people continue to agree with the points she made in her post. Like:

  • Instead of looking at Black History Month as being educational, she views it as ‘blacks whining and crying’ and that they should ‘move the f%$# on’.
  • She does what many uneducated do: try to pit African Americans against other groups and instances of oppression.

Let’s stop and focus on that second point (which is a common point made by those trying to deflect the race discussion - I have gotten into numerous arguments with racists who make this same exact point).

The purpose of Black History Month is not to say we got it worse than anyone else, the purpose is to educate ourselves because no one else is going to do it. As a result of gaining that education, we are able to have a stronger knowledge of self. We KNOW other groups got it bad as well, but this is not a competition, this is survival. Cultural genocide is a very effective tactic.

When people do not have knowledge of self, they are more easily controlled.

African slaves were mixed up to make sure they were not from the same cultural groups and tribes. Why? Being unable to communicate with other slaves because they spoke different languages makes it that much harder to organize an escape. Furthermore, they were forced to convert to Christianity and give up their own cultural beliefs to make them ‘worship’ the majority and believe they are inferior. In addition, the majority convinced other members of the majority that it was “the White Man’s Burden” to look after the Africans who were an “inferior race”.

Black Entertainment Television

I already touched on the reason why BET was created. This purpose is a direct counter claim to the idea that having a WET (White Entertainment Television) station would be racist. Newsflash: BET was formed because the vast majority of television programming targets White Americans, of course. What, are we supposed to just sit there and say oh well and wait? The majority can’t have their cake and eat it too: first they say Blacks are in their predicament as a result of not taking responsibility and then call us racist or opportunists when we step up to the plate. Definitely a catch-22.

Bull.

Blacks stepped up and the Civil Rights Movement was born, Black History Month was born, BET was born, and much, much, more. Granted, I am not a fan of BET programming, however, I do recognize its purpose of existence and love it.

In Conclusion

It would be absolutely wonderful if there was no need for Black History Month (Woodson started it with the hope that there would not be a need for it in the future) or the NAACP or other institutions that fight for the civil rights of people of color. (Sidenote: The NAACP does not fight for just Blacks, it exists for all people of color.) However, we are very far from this happening. As I stated before, I am only 28 years old. This means I was born in 1979 - right at the end of the Civil Rights Movement. How can someone expect the hundreds of years of damage to just disappear and everything to be all right in the matter of just 30 years???

I can tell you who - the uneducated.

Preach!!! Kudos to the author for countering and educating the ignorant! How can one expect to eradicate 300 years of systemized and categorical racism and oppression with a well intentioned but poorly funded or thought out programs sponsored by the government.

Thanks for the comment you left on my blog linking me here, it was actually a very fascinating read. It’s nice to see that someone has actually intelligently presented their opinion against her entry instead of blindly attacking it.

I agree with the model. Which is shocking because Miss South Carolina couldn’t form a coherent sentence. I’m impressed that a model could say something meaningful and true. When humans do not FIRST understand what makes us connected, pointing out and “bringing self esteem” to our differences, only polarizes the idea of black and white. Instead of greyish pink humans and brown ones. You demonize white power, but black power is ok????????????????????????????????????????????????

  7. Ms Goddessbody on September 23rd, 2007 2:27 pm

The best reply to her “One America…” post would be a resounding “B*tch puhllease”! I feel within the context of her controversial blog, she was seeking this very type of response- she wanted to be something to talk about. and she has achieved that very thing with her uninformed, uneducated and reckless comment!

Slavery manifested a whole new culture of pioneers who took bits and pieces of themselves, mixed w/ a little African heritage, and blended into a new world to create BLACK AMERICA! And just as every individual has the RIGHT to celebrate the day of their own birth, Black Americans have the right (and responsibility) to take the time to pay homage to all those that have died, struggled and contributed to make Black American culture what is it today!

What she fails to understand is that Black History Month is not so much, “bitchin and whinin” about slavery, it is a unified acknowldgement of where we came from as a people and the strides we have yet to make.

So to dare say the very idea of Black History Month is anything but a very essential part, nonetheless of American history is a BOLD, but ignorant point of view that deep down, her ass even knows makes no sense!

Lets look at what a White Power station would be:

    - anti-black
    - anti-semitic
    - anti-gay
    - would stress the superiority of whites over everyone non-white

So, would you really want a channel like that to exist?

You still have absolutely no idea what Black Power is. I keep trying to explain it to you but you either cannot get it or choose not to. The Black Power Movement effectively said: blacks, you have the power to make positive change for yourself, utilize it. Dr. King is a prime example of the Black Power Movement, he stood up to utilize that power to make positive change. Regardless of how many times I tell you this, you still seem to think it is the same as the KKK walking down the street yelling “White Power”. That tells me that you are purposefully ignoring what Black Power is.

  17. Adrianne Curry on September 24th, 2007 7:30 pm

I feel my message was a bit twisted. I never said we should stop teaching what we do during black history month…just that we change the name because it seperates….UNITE

I do NOT wangt BET to go away! I enjoy a few of their shows! I do not like the name, it seperates blacks from others IN MY EYES…I want a better world, and I KNOW we will be able to progress…if I didnt think we could, I would leave the country!

THANK YOU for being able to disagree with me without dishing low blows and being rude.. VERY MATURE! ; )

    Kirshan’s Response:

What would you rather they be called then? Regardless of the names, they would still be the exact same.

I agree with you on the rude thing, people get into arguments and start name calling and then the substance of the debate disappears.

I really don’t think Adrianne Curry meant for her blog to become this overplayed drama. Everyone is going overboard with it. I People need to relax and take it for what it is, a rant of a lunatic. It’s the reaction to it that she’s talking about. I don’t think you need to get over black history, but you need to get over Adrianne Curry.
You are going overboard. You need to get over what she said. You know she’s an idiot, don’t dwell on it. You sound just as stupid as she does with your rants trying to defend everything.

I also suggest that every person who felt disguested by her outburst send a letter to VH1 asking them to cancel her show.

  23. mudkipz on September 24th, 2007 8:26 pm

I guess that’s what she is then? Uneducated?

  24. Kirshan Murphy on September 24th, 2007 8:35 pm

    @ Ella Kay

I wrote this response not just for her, but for the huge amount of people that agree with her.

I could care less about the mindless and uneducated rantings of an individual, however, I do care when it comes to someone writing this and then the thousands of Americans coming out saying they agree (I say thousands based on the number of comments in her blog in support of her and in the Perez Hilton blog in support of her - this number is undoubtedly higher). That is a HUGE problem because it shows there are many in the majority who feel the same way.

By the way, I wasn’t defending anything. This article is based on facts. I wrote it because too many people are quick to form opinions based on emotion instead of fact. This is why you have uneducated opinions fueling racism.

  25. Jennifer on September 24th, 2007 8:52 pm

I still agree with Adrienne…if we had WET…White Entertainment Television, it would be called racist. What if there was an awards show for only whites…such as your soul train awards? It would be called racist as well. Think about it, then you can keep whining…just like Kanye.

    Kirshan Murphy’s Response:
Many people bring the same argument to the table and this is my response to that argument:

The majority of stations are already ‘white entertainment television’. As a result, BET and other stations were formed. It was formed because Blacks, and others, were not going to continue sitting around waiting for the majority to create programming that may be of interest to us. BET is not about exclusion. There are artists of multiple backgrounds on the channel who are very successful (Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Amy Whinehouse, Christina Aguilera, and many others), in addition to the fact that more whites purchase the music shown on BET than blacks do. Also, BET is currently white-owned.

Lets look at what a White Power station would be:

    - anti-black
    - anti-semitic
    - anti-gay
    - would stress the superiority of whites over everyone non-white

So, would you really want a channel like that to exist?

By the way, the Soul Train Awards are music awards. If you mean The NAACP Image Awards, then I can still say they are not about exclusion. Hell, Dave Matthews won an NAACP Image Award.

Your argument is another one based on lack of information. Did you actually read the above article?

  28. Kat on September 24th, 2007 9:03 pm

Thank you for this excellent post. I came here from your link on TMZ and am glad someone is posting the facts here! I’m white, and it makes me upset to see that so many people are quick to assume racism coming from black people. It’s great to have Black History Month to inform us of African American accomplishments, and BET is pretty much the only station not coming from a white mentality and is great for its different perspective on things. Neither is racist in the slightest. It doesn’t focus on black people for the merits of their skin color, it focuses on black people because of the African American culture.

Jennifer, there may be no WET, but look at all the shows that focus on specific ethnicities in Europe! There is a plethora of shows specifically chronicling the lives of Irish Americans and Italian Americans, and that is a type of white pride. White people often are lucky enough to know exactly which countries and cultures they come from, and we celebrate white pride by celebrating those European cultures that represent their heritage. Black people have formed their own equally valid and equally beautiful culture here in America, and they celebrate it with these things. It’s a cultural celebration, not a skin color celebration, and those should absolutely be allowed because we all participate in those (or at least we all should!).

Anyway, kudos for the great post!

Adri only spoke the truth. Its how most Americans feel, the diff between us and her is, she is a celebrity……therefor ppl feel they have to bash her……..you have made her point for her, when someone white says anything about another race we are called ignorant, rasist…etc
when a black person does anything wrong, Rev Al and Rev Jessie are the first to jump in and start trouble…….i say GET OVER IT………if u dont like what she has to say or who she is then dont read her blogs and dont write about her!

You want to talk about uninformed and ignorant?
if there was such thing as a “white history month” it would be boycotted by Rev. Al Sharpton.
In case you forgot, many slaves were sold to the colonies by OTHER BLACKS. Do you not notice how much black on black crime there is? And don’t give me that ” oh the white man, he keeps us down!!” bullshit. if young black men don’t want to be looked at like they are about to commit a crime. Don’t fucking dress and talk like you never went to school, and then get mad at me when I avoid you. If you are dressed
I grew up loving black people. My best friend was a gentle person named Sonya. She was black. Now as I grew up I realized how fucking bullshit it is between races. Affirmative action???? What the fuck. I have green eyes, and pink hair, im different why can’t I get extra help in college?
Jews have been discriminated against for CENTERIES. They had a fucking Holocaust. You know what they did? They picked up the pieces and MOVED ON!!! You don’t see them sitting on there ass, complaining about the “white man”. Black people have been getting on my nerves lately.

  31. Kirshan Murphy on September 24th, 2007 9:35 pm

    @crazybeautiful and tay

Wow, you both still don’t get it.

crazybeautiful said “when someone white says anything about another race we are called ignorant, rasist…etc”

Yeah, someone is called ignorant when they make an ignorant statement and someone is racist when they make a racist statement.

Tay, it is sad that you continue to try to deflect the discussion by trying to compare oppression. It is asinine. By the way, your argument about the Jews sounds like you are saying that Blacks are lazy and we have not done anything to better our situation. If that is what you mean, then you are another of the uninformed and uneducated and prove further why Black History Month needs to exist.

Black on black crime - you really think social factors do not have ANY effect on this? Wow.

Both of you, please actually read the above article instead of commenting based on your preconceived opinions that were formed out of emotion and belief in stereotypes as opposed to actually being informed.

  32. Joe on September 24th, 2007 10:03 pm

That was a very well written piece on why Black History Month was created and is still needed.

Now I wonder if the GED receiving Mrs. Curry, who’s of Italian descent, is aware that October is National Italian American Heritage Month?

And if she is, would she be in favor of doing away with it as well, since apparently in her opinion, when a group remembers and celebrates their heritage it separates them from other Americans.

  33. rachel on September 24th, 2007 10:18 pm

  34. Sue. on September 24th, 2007 10:39 pm

Why is everyone trying to get at intelligence? Does intelligence and “educated” statements make Adrienne Curry’s boycott any better or worst than it already is. She singled us out, as if we were the only race with a Black History Month. Why on earth would you need “WET” when you have every other damn channel, lol. Thats some ignorance for all of ya’ll asses that is trying to prove her wrong or right through being “educated.” You don’t have to be “educated” to distinguish wrong from right, right? Adrienne you little cracked out bitch… now you can KISS MY BLACK ASS, because I don’t give a fuck… and if I Hear this equality thing again I am going to puke; why would you want to have equality when you’re the one superior, lmao. You want to take away the only thing we have to show the struggle of our ancestors. Well, I’ll be a racist and tell your dumb White ass to shut the fuck up, and kiss my ignorant Black ass. Oh [note: on my IO, I have mas peliculas… I guess that would be racist and inconsiderate of the Hispanics right? ] haha. Bitch kiss my ass, go suck your “boo’s” dick… do something useful with your mouth other than bashing the Black culture, because your ancestors have done enough.

  35. Sweet on September 24th, 2007 10:47 pm

First I’m just surprised how people can think that white power and “” power statements are similar. The vision behind the enpowerment of oppressed people is to get them unoppressed. ‘White power’ in the sense that most people know of it, involves the destruction and death of people of color and religions white supremicists disagree with.

That said, I made a comment on my blog,(myspace.com/tigerlilies85), breaking down my own personal objections to her statements. I think there’s a point that a person should go to let their opinions be heard, but to but them on a post like that to me says there is some deeper motive. Publicity, attention or just further her ignorance? I don’t know. It hurts and makes me very sad that people in positions of notarity use their words so carelessly. At least she admitted that. Oh and just to show how alive racism is today… check out news articles on Jena 6. That’s another reason I don’t visit the south and definetly wouldn’t let the sun go down on me there…

“Why is everyone trying to get at intelligence? Does intelligence and “educated” statements make Adrienne Curry’s boycott any better or worst than it already is.”

Ignorance and racism are by-products of being uninformed because people form these opinions without knowing the facts, as a result, you have opinions like Adrian Curry’s. That is why it is important to know the facts regarding something before forming an opinion.

  39. Christine (loves parentheses, "quotes", and being human) on September 24th, 2007 11:52 pm

Kirshan, thank you for your response to Sue. And Sue, Kirshan is right…your hateful, bitter, ignorant comments are no different from Adrienne’s…just the other side of the coin. “…you’re the one superior…”? Sue, perception is reality. You are doing yourself no justice with that mindset. What hurt me most was…”…because your ancestors have done enough.” Not all whites had rich, plantation-owning ancestors. Not all whites’ ancestors have been here long enough to have “done enough”. I am a white girl who grew up in a poor urban area. My “ancestors” consist of grandparents (on both sides) who came over “on the boat”. They came here about 80 years ago – after slavery was abolished. None of my “ancestors” were slave owners. Even if they *had* been here before slavery, they would have been too poor to own slaves. Am I going to pretend that my “ancestors” were not racist? No, I am not. My father is racist as are most of the people in my family. I’m proud to say I do not share the same views as them. It’s probably because I’m one of the most educated and intellectually curious in my family. I feel (at least, I would like to believe) that most of our generation (I’m in my 30s) would love a society where we see each other as HUMAN and not as Asian, Mexican, Italian American, African American, etc. It’s the people with views like Sue and Adrienne who hold us back from becoming an open, loving society. Thank you, Kirshan, for posting a link to your blog on her site (which I found through TMZ). It was worth sifting through her small-minded ramblings just to get here.

  40. KRisten on September 25th, 2007 12:04 am

Her comments were hideous and her responses to other people’s comments became even more disgusting as what was hidden beneath the surface of many peoples skin began to rise up.

Some people think ignorance is an insult or some bad word, but in truth it is a sickness. Thankfully it “IS” treatable.

Acknowledging your ignorance is the first step toward the cure(which she hopefully will do). Blog comments like this are a symptom of that ignorance.

I’m Glad she made these comments It was a catalyst that I hope brings more attention to this outbreak of poisonous mentality.

The more we go on thinking “Black” history is some sort of thing Black People inflicted on us and start realizing It is actually a Chapter in our history the government wants you to forget the easier it will be to move this country fwd on every level.
Black people Built this whole Muthafucka.
    ..I said it.
It really was not that hard.
We should all take note at the hideous comments that followed her blog and remember the greatest trick the devil pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. Some of these people are not card carrying members of the KKK but they all seem to be on the same page.

These 2 statements ring true all over the world.

1-Instead of looking at Black History Month as being educational, she views it as ‘blacks whining and crying’ and that they should ‘move the f%$# on.

2-She does what many uneducated do: try to pit African Americans against other groups and instances of oppression.

I apologize. After re-reading some of my comments, I feel I may have come off as ignorant. Although my grandparents were not slave owners, they (and others in my family since) have done harm not only to African Americans, but to themselves and the rest of us with their hatred and ignorant views. The best thing we can do is stop pointing fingers at what our ancestors did to others’ ancestors and take responsibility for our own actions. To use my favorite quote: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” — Mahatma Gandhi

I have one black friend who is blacker than coal and female lovers who smelled of honey and cucumber. Get the hell out of here! If i hear one more person say I HAVE LOTS OF BLACK FRIENDS im gonna PUKE up green vodka.

Thank you, Kirshan, for your insightful and intellegent article and your tactful and informative responses to persons issuing their comments here, both the negative and the positive.

I totally agree with your valid points and appreciate the need for you NOT to lower yourself to respond with the use of profanity and backing up your opinions with clear and insightful references.

Thank you for having the voice and articulation that others may not have. Stay strong!

    To Caleb
There are a number of WET’s we just don’t have to call them that.

So that this is age appropriate I’ll ask you this.
How was it possible for Aang the Avatar to fly from one end of the earth to the other on Appa and not see a single black person?

In most television shows Black people are Sidekicks,Bad Guys,Flunkies or just black pepper seasoning sprinkled on a “White bread” character to show how “Tolerant” or “Cool” they are.

Some of you might find this offensive but it is way too true.
To make a heroine seem more “Down to Earth” writers will add an unrequited person of color love interest or best friend.
I don’t want to be a compulsive list maker but uh…
    -Veronica Mars
    -Smallville
    -Felicity
and a host of other movies and televison shows that you are probably adding to your own list right now(mostly with Tyrese in them).
All of these shows use 2 dimensional cookie cutter black people as cops, robbers or support staff to make their white Hero or heroine like Heroin seem more sweet. And into your veins she goes!

Kick the habbit fella…You’ve been drugged.

I wish there really was a white Entertainment Television station so you could openly show how disgusting this country has been to non whites.

During white history month we could celebrate how we took every scientific discovery ever made and weaponized it so that we could oppress the little guys who thought gunpowder would be best used in Bombs and bullets instead of firecrackers for new years celebration.

We could even openly play all that footage of us hosing down those whiny alabama marchers…We shall over cooooooome….
We could do all those things and openly be proud of our heritage as CONQUERORS of this rugged land…(sigh)
I don’t want to spoil the end of my friends film but he insinuates in his film that white supremacists are behind the DNA ancestry project hoping to map enough African americans DNA so that they can launch a race based plague like the ones that effect only european and askinaze jews.

The biggest Trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist.
Well guess what he exists and his first plague is ignorance!

Stupid white coked nose slag! she can barely write a sentence without any grammar mistakes, but she wants someone to take her bulemic, washed up,white trash ass serious. I can’t wait for those recessive devils to be wiped out by the sun and go to her blog and all the other white trash agrees with that bimbo. If you want another 15 mins of fame. Attack black people!

And I love it when the cave people ignore the question when you tell them that 99% of tv is white and white history is 11 months of the year and Natives, hispanics,Irish,Asians and gays all have their special days or months. Gay white men have a gay pride every fucking week. But whites love to attack blacks on anything, because they’re are natural enemy. You mutants hate on black people, because we are the earths original people and ya’ll mutated from us. Truth be said. Whites don’t really have no history, that’s why ya’ll mad. Ya’ll history is theivery. We built all of the great civilizations from Lumeria,Atlantis, nubia to Egypt/Kemet. So we should have a dam year. If it wasn’t for blacks none of your motherfuckas wouldn’t exist and our ancestors build this whole racist country on free labor. But you bird sh!ts going to get ya’ll karma. Globally warming is only the beginning of wiping you genetically weak, recessive devils off this planet. Y’all bitches need to worry about the sun killing y’all pale, nasty, flat asses off.

    WOW.
What is scary is I really don’t disagree with much of what lacosteboi79 said.
I know that many people find EVERYTHING he said offensive but as a member of an openly secret society(judaism) It is sad that the truth sounds like “Crazy Conspiracy Talk”.
Destabilizing a region is the same method employed today as it was employed years ago when slave traders supported one dictator over another Don’t believe me? Ask the Huttus or tutsi or Iran Contra’s or Sandanistas.
Today when the guy from Iran spoke what bothered me the most was half the time he was telling the truth..when he wasn’t Lying about homosexuals not existing in Iran.

The problem with your rant lacosteboi79 is you have knowledge and no power.
This is because you do not have the knowledge to use your power. I know more about “Black History” than most of my black peeps but more importantly I know how to predict the future.

The future is television you all are free thinkers but the majority is a group of monkey see monkey do followers who walk dress and act like whatever they see on BET.
You wanna know how to effect change in your community?

Don’t write a book about it.
Make a movie about it flood the public access shows with action packed films about it.
Make a cartoon like that other girl.

  52. Kat on September 25th, 2007 2:35 am

KRisten, I hope you realize that you are every bit as much the problem. White people aren’t evil, and black people aren’t either. INDIVIDUALS can be evil, and skin color has nothing to do with it.

Now, I’m sorry, but your friend is an idiot. I’m involved in genetic research and a huge reason we map genes is so that we can prove that humans are equal regardless of race and that we’re essentially all the same. We’re using our research to take on racist ideas proclaiming that we’re so different from one another. African genes are also being mapped to see if any HIV resistance genes are in the population, and if so, to explore their usage in medication for other people. To be honest, it really pisses me off when people who know absolutely nothing about science make up conspiracy theories to make our motives seem corrupt. You’ll actually find that scientists are some of the most selfless people out there and wouldn’t do any of the crap you were talking about there. Also, a virus couldn’t be made in that way, so maybe your friend should bother learning about what he’s saying before making outrageous and detrimental slander like that. If you want me to give the full scientific explanation of why that’s incorrect and impossible, just let me know.

If you think white people are inherently awful because of their skin color, you are no better than a Klansman. Skin color is irrelevant to character, and I don’t care whether you’re black or white — a racist is a racist. They all contribute to the problem.

  53. Kat on September 25th, 2007 2:48 am

lacosteboi79, you’re an even bigger idiot. Black culture is no better or worse than white culture. No one is “inferior”, and our genetic changes were based on how to best survive in our separate climates around the world many of thousands of years ago. Your skin is black because you lived in a very sunny environment and being dark-skinned prevented skin cancer. Europeans and some Asians are fair-skinned because they lived in cloudy, darker environments and needed to have less pigment in their skin to better absorb Vitamin D. It has nothing to do with your personality or abilities what color your skin is.

Also, the seat of civilization is in the Middle East, not Africa. They aren’t black, they’re considered Arabic by modern classification. Humans first evolved in Africa, but that doesn’t mean that the best humans were made in Africa. It just means that it is where we started. Beautiful civilizations and cultures have been built all over the world by all different ethnicities, are you just going to pretend those didn’t happen too?

Global warming disasters aren’t just going to kill white people, by the way. Africans will be some of the first affected, but what do you care? As long as some white people get killed, you seem to be pleased. Your views are seriously screwed up. When people are rude to you, just know that it’s not because you’re black, it’s that you’re a misinformed and outspoken idiot.

p.s. Scary fact for you, but if you’re an African American, you’re part white! I guess you’re inferior genetic scum now, you poor thing. ;p
(it’s weird, you use the same pseudo-scientific arguments that I see many Neo-Nazis use online. are you just trolling?)

Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HHC) is a disease which affects only Europeans – and the measure of this disease can be used to determine the amount of pure White European element in any given geographical region.

Unsurprisingly, HHC is most prevalent in northern Europe, and least prevalent in southern Europe – this once again tying in with the already discussed prevalence of the Black African originated prevalence of sickle cell syndrome in that part of Europe.

    In this article
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10482634/

Morgan is challenging all people to take things higher and accept that “Black” history is “American” history. These are the precepts that the black history month were built on.

“You’re going to relegate my history to a month?” the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). “I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history.”

He isn’t calling for boycotts on education or networks it sounds to me like he is saying It’s time for “YOU WHO ARE IN CONTROL” to start teaching the story of these heroes who happen to be black in regular mainstream social studies classes.

His well chosen words insinuate that someone is relegating the teaching of his history. We can see the obvious differences between Morhan and adrienne’s comments thanks for posting.

I really don’t think most on here that commented really got what she was trying to say. Most everyone is focusing on BET & Black History month comment and totally missed her point. She is correct, the more things that we have seperate from each other the longer it is going to take for us as Americans to get over racism. Yes, once upon a time BET was necessary because MTV wouldn’t play certain musicians. But now with rap & hip hop being in the mainstream is it really necessary to be called BET? I do believe that history of all cultures should be taught more in schools year round. We all have to live with each other so we should know about everybody’s history. Terrible things have happened to all sorts of groups of people in America and the healing process will never being until people start letting their wounds heal and, yes, move forward like many others have. You can not love until you allow love into your heart and quit holding on to hate and bitterness. One last point, she was trying to make the point of us being one race the human race who are all Americans. Imagine that..

But for the others, this is a great read, I’ve got to tell you. Im going to forward this to my mother and all of my friends because I feel that this is very important for this argument… especially if you are one who are uninformed of the history of African Americans in this country!

LOL!!! look at all this! This is EXACTLY what she wanted! Go to her blog and read again…she stated those things INTENTIONALLY to get ATTENTION and all of you people are giving it to her.

All the people who are agreeing with her are agreeing for the wrong reasons. Read the statement at the end of her blog. I’ll even quote her for you!

“I have a confession…The topic here (black history month/BET) is not what my message was about..>I just knew it would get a lot more attention if I used it as an example. My message is to BECOME ONE. AMERICANS, celebrate things as such, not label them this or that…Black History month should NOT go away…” -Adrianne Curry

You see? She just used the most controversial topic she could find to catapult herself into the spotlight. Honestly, before this blog, I didn’t know who Adrianne Curry was. Mission accomplished.

Real smart to burn the first white person to speak out about something to both black and white people without patronizing black people. Burn the witch! Go do it! She was not being hateful, she was speaking from her heart, IF you let white people do this more often (even if they make small mistakes and have some facts and some ideas off) without jumping all over them, white and blacks would be able to “talk” to each other without all this bullshit “oh, whitey, you can’t say that bullshit”!

It’s stupid!!!! STOP HATING. LISTEN BEFORE YOU GO SHOUTING HATE! MLK had a dream that we could all speak and learn from each other. YOU ARE MAKING WHITE PEOPLE AFRAID OF YOU!!!!!!!

She made a few mistakes in her message but hear it loud! Some of us “whte folks want your kids to grow with ours and see “no color” we want peace in the world, and we want ONE LOVE.

Get off your soap boxes and hear the message, yes she has a weird idea, but think out of the box and walk the line with thise of us who want FREEDOM FOR ALL!!!

    to Kirshan Murphy,
what the hell does white power and anti-gay sentiment have to do with each other?
    NOT A DAYUMED THING
what you think there arent any gay people that are racists? more specifically, I would appreciate it in the future if you left the homosexual and black struggles seperate. They are different, struggles all together!
If tomorrow terrorists came to the country and said they were going to round up all the gays and blacks…. there is NO PLACE I COULD HIDE as a black man! All you would have to do is look on my face… Gay people… you only know they are gay because they tell you they are gay…. no other reason! Because homosexuality is NOT and ethnic group… it is an activity!

    Kirshan Murphy’s response:
Um, huh? What in the hell are you talking about? The only thing I mentioned about anti-gay sentiment was in my comment addressing someone trying to say the White Power movement is the same as the Black Power movement. They are not the same. I gave an example of what a White Power station would be like and mentioned, among other things, that it would be anti-gay. You do know that the KKK, Neo-Nazis, and other white supremacist groups are anti-gay right? So it would be part of the programming for the station.

I really have know idea where you got I was making any sort of comparison with the anti-gay movement.

Boy, talk about someone coming out of no where with a random comment.

  67. twilight on September 25th, 2007 12:20 pm

The ideology behind White power and Black power are not the same thing. This is a classic example of how similar words can have different meanings. The White power movement was started as an anti black movement dating back to reconstruction when a lot of poor white southerners feared that they would be disenfranchised by the newly freed black slaves. The White Power movement has always been about hate and fear, whereas if Stoner would research history, he would find that the Black Power movement came as a result of Jim Crow in the South and organized social and governmental racism everywhere else. What a lot of white people take for granted is their identity and culture which they have always had in tact. When many of them decided to come over here or in some cases where forced, they were allowed to maintain their culture and identity. They were allowed to fratenize and to discuss their history, their original land, etc., even if they were brought over as indentured servants which was the case early Irish slaves/indentured servants who were brought over during the formation of America. Black people have been taught to dislike everything about themselves, ideas that are reinforced in the media and through seemingly innocent things people say. This is not an indictment against white people, but it is challenge to those who really want to see equality or tolerance , to really research the history behind slavery and on and to put yourself in that other person’s shoes to truly understand psychologically where black people are coming from.

MY Boycott against BET and Black History Month

Because of my last blog, and all the wonderful feedback I got..it made me
    think…

Obviously you have not thought about it enough

This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the
fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color.
However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE
AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native
Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE
SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to
have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN
HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is
    SICK and RACIST.

How conveniently you forget, the hardship black people have endured, were the Indians forced to this country? Were the Indians forced to believe a new religion? Were they cross-breed with the master Blood? Let not make this about Indians and black people because, neither race of people has a good history once they in encountered the white race. In your eyes black history month is a problem, well I challenge you to open your eyes and look in the mirror, we get one month to feel good about ourselves and reflect on the history of our people since we have been in this country, and you have a problem with that? We destroyed the country; explain to me how hired, stolen help destroyed this country? Read your history, the white English man stole this country not the enslaved African. Affirmative action is not new it has been going on for decades, however it was only a benefit to the majority, now that the minority is getting a fair shake you have a problem you are complete idiot.

Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That
does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the fuck on. Do we
hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do
we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY
broke their backs making them? Do we hear them bitch and moan about
Hitler, etc? (My hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE
AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race
opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian,
american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the
EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are,
is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.

Move on, time to move on? Fine let us move on; uh wait a minute we can’t move on if the problems of the past still stand in our way to this very day. What country are you living in? Did Jena 6 not ring a bell in your empty head? The 19 60’s 50’s’40’s mentality has not die yet, those people still hold political offices in some states the fore we can not move on. That is why I don’t trust of favor older white men, because when they were younger White men, they are the one that were calling us Niggas to our face, now they do it under their breath so as not to get their asses kicked (see Jena 6) but just because they are not saying it does mean they are not thinking it, trust. The Jews you want to take it there referencing the Jews? Have you heard of the holocaust http://www.teacheroz.com/hitler.htm well I have in-fact you would be hard pressed to find any one who hasn’t heard of it. The Jews get their due, plus they got there own country see Israel , not to mention they own most of the media in this country, plus they run our government like puppets, so leave the Jews out of you ignorant rant thank you. “Your is hubby is a Jew, yet we don’t” so I guess since you married a Jew your a Jew to too now? Ok out all the races you named which one was forced to come here? Which one had there history wipe-out? Language wiped out, blood line deluded; basic civil rights still being violated regularly? I can only think of one. Ho9w about you tell your Jew Hubby, to walking the shoes of a black man, know not just for a day but for a life time and give us a report on his views.

I am over this shit. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If
any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be
considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.

Who founded Black history month? Couldn’t have been a black person, sense when do they listen to us? Sure we may have suggested it but I’m sure some white person get’s the credit. Who cares about Eve and our origin, sure it’s good to know but what does it change? How does it help us in this country? Double standards have always been in place and they still are, if you choose o ignore then that is on you, I’m smart enough to know that they would ask you your race on an application if it didn’t really matter, wake-up.

Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named
“Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was
the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was
handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know
what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS
of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist shit anymore. Let us
teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope
one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally
    realize that WE are ONE.

Funny that you think dating a black man gives you insight on being black, and far be it from me to attempt to defend every Black person and their personal choices. Now having said that, it is pretty convenient for you to pass judgment when you are sitting in the cat bird seat. I agree that we should all recognize each other as just humans, but that is not the world we live in. The world we live in is a dictatorship, run by the majority, which does not view people is the equality observation that you hold, so we as the minority have to adjust our thinking and action according to the world which we live in.

So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT
like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a
country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is
unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month.
Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote
at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN
HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a
    difference in this country.

Like the idea of having a channel for one race? Ok then what race does all the other channels represent? This is not a trick question, the other channels represent the majority which is white folks, yeah the CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox may not say it in their title but rest assured us Black folks know who they represent. I encourage you to study history please do, here is a quote for you “those would don’t learn from history are bound to repeat it”

I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian,
Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the
African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY.

We can be Americans together, when and only when we are treated equality, and you choosing to ignore the facts, but that don’t make the problem go away.

    If you
want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out,
count me the FUCK out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud
that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as
anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2
months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black
leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name
of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my
part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we
are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!

If you want to stand for some thing, how about you stand for equal rights, how about you stand for women’s rights, how about fair treatment under the law, how about the falsely convicted? Stand for immigration, stand for better education, stand for the 1st amendment, stand for the middle case which is being driven into the poor class, stand for African getting the hand chopped off for Blood Diamonds, Stand for the end to sex slavery, stand for the end of the conflict in the middle east, I could go on but I hope you get my message. We don’t need you to stand against BET or Black History month, focus your energy of FOX news and stop them from leading us into the next War with Iran, how about that.

It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE!
My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up
for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF
AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our
history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not
move forward. That’s why I am done with this shit. You are all my brothers
and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with
    each other..sisters…brothers!”

now, have fun burning me at the stake ; )

I have said all I need to say, my last word are as follows, you need to pull you head out of your 4 point of contact, take off those Lilly white blinders you’re wearing and take a deep breath of reality. Neither you nor I will live to see the day when we are all treated as equals, maybe our kids have a better chance but that is only if people like you stop sugarcoating everything and just call a spade a spade. I’m done.

IT’S A SHAME TO SEE PEOPLE ARE STILL SO IGNORANT. I MEAN WHAT, DID SHE NOT GO TO SCHOOL FOR 18 YEARS OF HER LIFE. YES, AS AFRICAN AMERICAN’S WE DO TEND TO GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK BUT IF YOU DON’T HAVE A STRONG MIND, WILL, AND DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED THEN YUO WON’T. BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS A CELEBRATION OF ALL THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT WE AS PEOPLE HAVE MADE. ALL RACES CELEBRATE THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND BELIEFS SO WHAT MAKES IT SO BAD THAT WE HAVE ONE ENTIRE MONTH OF IT. I MEAN, OUR KIDS ARE TAUGHT WHITE HISTORY EVERYDAY. SO WHEN WE DO IT FOR ONE MONTH, AND THE SHORTEST MONTH OUT OF THE YEAR AT THAT, ALL OF A SUDDEN IT’S RACIST. THAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE NOW, WE DON’T THINK BEFORE WE SPEAK. SHE REALLY PUT HER FOOT IN HER MOUTH.

  71. Kat on September 25th, 2007 6:18 pm

Kristen, don’t worry about those things. White hate sites twist research into being for their own purposes, and you’ll also find that most of their research is either fabricated or 100 years old (like all of the ridiculous and poorly-based skull measurement studies). I don’t really know what they’re getting at there besides that they’re trying to sound like their beliefs have any kind of scientific basis, which they don’t.

See, even if you can find a disease that is common among white people, not all white people will have that disease or even that allele. Any genetic disorder is only going to afflict a small amount of the population. It would be purposeless to determine whiteness based on diseases that are present. Just because it is a common genetic flaw also doesn’t mean that there is a weakness for people to catch it. Genetic diseases are in your genes, they are not contagious in any way. They wouldn’t be able to hurt black people by knowing what diseases might show up in black people. Someone could have the blackest skin in the world and easily not have that disease show up in their genome. There’s no real correlation. Also, you can’t make a virus for black people because all the cell antigens are basically the same regardless of race — that is how you target a virus, and there would be no way at all to target black people alone.

A LOT of horrible stuff happens in this world, but I’m actually in the “behind closed doors” world of science. Genetic research is pretty altruistic. We go into the field to help people, never to hurt people. There is surprisingly little harmful research about genetics going on in the US. I wouldn’t worry about it, look more at world politics than at scientists if you’re worried about that kind of atrocity.

Thank you. I learned a lot about in this post that I did not know before. It really clarified what the Black Power movement truly was.

So what I see now in Ms. Curry’s comments is an impassioned, well-intentioned but historically ignorant outburst who wants to break down the doors that she feels between herself and others, but is trying to do so by tearing down someone else’s wall instead of opening her own door. Failing to understand cause and effect, she has concluded that support systems are causing the divide, rather than realizing that the divide is what necessitates the support networks.

Curry has taken movements started by blacks to empower blacks, and misinterpreted them as efforts meant to divide society. She has misunderstood that just because something does not support her, it does not mean it excludes her.

She has figured out that “American” History as taught in schools needs to accurately reflect the whole strata of racial experience, but rather than trying to close the gap by expanding that teaching, she has incorrectly fixated on removing external sources of knowledge that don’t revolve around her.

She is right that American history and society needs to stop marginalizing all other races.

She is just tragically, almost comically, wrong in what she should — or can — do to affect that change.

And I’m sorry if I sounded mad, it’s just that you have no idea how hard it was for those scientists to get grant money in the first place to do their research on Africans. There is no money to be made in Africa (meaning virtually no one will want to sponsor research on it), but the scientists who decided to do their work there didn’t care and fought hard to get funding and make sure that science was equally representing people in less well-off countries, too. They had to try harder than anybody else in order to fight for equal rights for Africans in scientific research. So it really angers me when such a great and altruistic group of people is accused of trying to kill or harm Africans in any way.

The big debate started when an HIV resistance mutation was discovered in populations of European descent (this mutation was called Delta 32). A lot of people in Africa seem to be HIV resistant or at least AIDS resistant, and many scientists and people thought it was unfair that research wasn’t done on these people just because they were African. In case you didn’t know, many bioscientists get their money from pharmaceuticals, and those companies truly only want to fund projects that will be profitable for them — there is hardly any humanitarian aspect. The research done in Africa is in no way profitable, so it was pretty damn hard to get funding. These people went and did it anyway, and I admire them tremendously for it.

Any slander against these scientists could make them lose their support, too, so it’s important for your friend to realize how he/she might be screwing over some of the few people working their asses off to make sure Africans are being helped by scientists. That would be a major setback in human rights, so make sure your friend isn’t being controversial for the sake of being controversial — there could be terrible consequences.

    I accept your apology.
I fwded my filmmaker friend what you said but he is even more determined. his words
    —————————————–
“The naivete’ of scientists has been the birth of many machinations of armageddon. Smashing the atom, Cultivating the germ and now the mapping of the human genome. If I truly believed what this so called scientist says I would deserve the fate that awaits. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. The men who harnassed the atom did not envision Hiroshima the men who FUNDED them did. Tell him ignorance is a curable disease and I am praying for the cure”
    ————————————-
If you want to talk to him he would like to pick your brain for more elements to put in his film. He believes you would be an excellent source of dialogue for one of the scientists.

Totally off topic here and piggy backing kristen.
The information that hate site had acquired was gathered from the CDC and other publicly funded projects. Scientists I have spoken to always explore the improbable and never say “THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE” you talk a good talk I’d like to meet you in the real world.

  77. Kat on September 25th, 2007 10:22 pm

Well, I’m pretty sure I don’t want my words to be used against me and against scientists, and I’m fairly certain they would be. I just want to know, why exactly is he making this allegation? Is it mere speculation? Does he have a strong background in genetics? If he did, he would see that his allegations don’t actually make any sense and that the research aim there would be impossible. Genetics could be used in many ways to harm society, but that is absolutely not one of the ways it could. And trust me, pharmaceuticals would rather make money off of black people than annihilate them. The only color they see is green — money! Why destroy people that they could use to get money off of? (it’s sad that they think that way, but it’s reality.)

It is truly ignorant to make accusations without knowing the facts. Tell him that if he really really wants to pursue this, first take a university course in basic genetics, then one in human molecular genetics, and then finally one in molecular mechanisms of disease. I think his fears would be assuaged about genetic research being used for racist and possibly genocidal means. It can’t really be used in that way at all. If you are going to worry about genetics, worry about rich people getting to buy better genetic traits to engineer their children with — that is a very possible and very negative potential outcome of genetic research. But to further racism? Not at all.

Science has furthered the world far more than it has hurt it, by the way. Now we can treat cancer pretty well. Now we can fight against Malaria, we have partially eradicated Polio, and we are getting pretty good treatments for HIV. By all means the atom bomb was an atrocity, but it certainly doesn’t invalidate science’s other accomplishments. You’ll find most research today is good, not evil. Really, if he wants to know the truth, it’s key to get education and not just speculate. Tell him to take those classes I mentioned, they’re quite enlightening and will definitely restore his faith in science.

  78. Kat on September 25th, 2007 10:36 pm

Oh, some things are impossible, though. 2 + 2 is never going to be 6. You can’t create or destroy matter. And similarly, no virus is going to just affect black people (and if it did, that would be because it started in a black community — a white person could get it just as easily if exposed). Even with all the genetic research in the world, you won’t be able to do that. See, the human genome is 99.9 percent similar. That 99.9% is also what makes us vulnerable to the same viruses and infectious organisms no matter who we are. For example, the reasons black people are affected by sickle cell anemia is that having that mutation in just one allele makes people immune to getting malaria, giving it a selective advantage and making it widespread in the population. Being black in itself doesn’t make you prone to catching it; if you have it, it’s that you happen to be born with that trait because of your heritage. It’s not contagious, and so it’s not as if all black people have some sort of weakness for catching sickle cell.

Likewise, the “plagues” that affect only Europeans and Jews are actually not plagues, they’re genetic disorders that have been caused by mutations over time that gave some kind of a selective advantage at one point and have remained in the population for that reason.

  79. Kat on September 25th, 2007 10:47 pm

Anyway, I’ve enjoyed talking to all of you. I’m probably going to leave now because I’m spending a bit too much time explaining things and not enough time on my actual work! I just really really really want you all to know that science is not trying to harm black people, because you shouldn’t have to worry about that. It’s horrible to think about the possibility of course, but that’s something horrible that is just far too improbable and unlikely to actually happen. Back to the original post, thank you again, it was a great read!

    have a great life, everyone!

Why are as Americans concerned over the ramblings of a BIMBO, she’s not and intellectual nor is educated.

The problem in America today is Racialization and Conformity.
America isn’t the land of conformity racial or otherwise. It’s a melting pot. American food is hot dogs (Germany), Pizza (Italian), Tacos (Mexican), and Fried Chicken (African).

If a Japanese-American has a Japanese flag on his car is he a racist? Dose he hate America? NO!! He is proud of his heritage and his culture. I’m half German and Trinidadian (Island in the Caribbean). Yes, in my house I have a German Flag and a Trinidadian Flag and of course an American flag. We forget how important culture and ones history is. A people without a culture or history is a lost people. And if you look at neighborhoods (ghettoes) where people have little or no ties to their African-American or African culture they have higher crime rates and incidents of suicide. That’s one of the reasons that Black history month is important, Self-pride, Self-respect, and a appreciation for your culture and the cultures of others.

The difference between WHITE POWER and BLACK POWER is the difference between Self empowerment and Hate. The term “BLACK POWER” was used as at reaction to the racial oppression of African Americans in the US made popular by the Black Panthers (There were also White people involved in the Black Panther movement, my mother being one). Verses the term “WHITE POWER” which was made popular by NEO NAZI skinheads whom teach that pure whites are Superior and all non-whites and mixed people are inferior. They also fly the flag of an crazy dictator which is not only un American but is offensive to every decent person of German decent, its only equal is if an Saudi Arabian holds up a pic of Bin Ladin or an African-American holds up a sign “Kill Whitie” (There are no Black, Asians , or Hispanice in the Neo Nazi movement to my knowledge). Hence BET is not racist. One day hopefully BET will be obsolete but that day has not come yet. And if you don’t think so Ask Bill Oreilly or better yet the Jene 6.
