Nooses, nooses, and more nooses

I follow the news regularly and I have noticed a substantial up tick in noose incidents over the past month or so. I haven’t posted about them here because I did not want to sound like a broken record.
However, this noose crap is getting ridiculous.
First I posted about the noose incident near Jena, Louisiana. No explanation needed for that one. Also, if you remember, the whole Jena 6 situation began when whites hung a noose from what was supposed to be a ‘white only’ tree on the school’s campus.
This summer the Coast Guard dealt with a couple of noose incidents as well.
Now, the latest noosetastic (yeah, a word I just made up) episode happened on Columbia University’s campus yesterday morning. A noose was hung outside of an African American professor’s door. (Make sure to check out the race incident time line to the right of the article)
Jack Turner, writing as a guest contributor for Racialicious, broke down other noose incidents in Pittsburgh that I had not heard of.
I mean, really? Is this the new hotness? Hanging nooses?
The crazy part is that Carmen over at Racialicious pointed out the following comment on the Columbia Spectator’s Editorial Board response:
I will bet dollars to donuts that the ‘incident’ was created by either a black student or a black student organization that is going out of its way to bring the eeeeeeeevils of raaaaaaaaaacism into the forefront. 99 times out of 100 these ‘incidents’ are staged and fake. White people simply dont have the balls to go around hanging nooses anymore.
We seriously dont think of black people all that much, I promise you. The only ones obsessed with race these days are the militant leftist afro-centric organizations on liberal college campuses such as yours, and self hating white liberals.
Wow. Well, not really ‘wow’. I hear and read comments just like this all the time. I guess I am a militant because I am a fan of equality. I also guess that the only whites that are fans of equality are “liberals” and hate themselves.
The person that left that comment is yet another race deflector.
There are couple things you can take from all of the noose incidents:
- The obvious - racism still exists
- That even when a racist incident happens that you can SEE for your own eyes, there are those that remain in denial in regards to the issue of race
People act like the Civil Rights Movement took place one hundred years ago. I was born in 1979 when the movement was on its last leg. I am 28 years old now, why would we expect that in such a short period of time that everything is all good and racism doesn’t exist?
Sigh.
UPDATE: I was just reading an article on Alternet that breaks down even MORE incidents I did not know about: White Supremacists Urge Followers to Hang Nooses in Their Communities.

I read this story yesterday afternoon and, on my way to class at 4:51pm, I saw my next door neighbors had hung two purple nooses from the tree in their front yard. Since they have a swing on the same tree, I tried to somehow rationalize that maybe it was some sort of rope game that only looked like nooses. Yet, from the way the necks were tied, I knew there was nothing else it could have been. I snapped a photo, from my car, with my camera phone but I don’t know how good it is yet cuz I haven’t uploaded it on my computer. When my mom confronted the neighbors, the father of the house said it was just a joke for Halloween and he didn’t understand what the problem was because -direct quote - “after all, more white people were hung than black people.” The nooses were removed by the children.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that our neighbors didn’t have any other halloween “decoration” in their yard, not even a pumpkin. Just two empty purple nooses.
